What is an ITIN?
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number issued by the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) to foreign nationals and resident aliens who don’t have and aren’t eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN). It’s for tax reporting purposes only.
Why do you need ITIN?
If you’re not a U.S. citizen or resident and you have income from the U.S., you might need an ITIN. This is a tax ID number for people who don’t have an SSN. For instance, if you have investments in the U.S., receive a pension from a U.S. company, own property in the U.S., or have a business that makes money in the U.S., you’ll probably need an ITIN to file your taxes.
How do you apply for an ITIN?
You must complete IRS Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and mail it to the IRS along with supporting documentation.
